Uganda is today holding the first International Widows’ Day celebrations, a day marked worldwide every 23rd of June.
International Justice Mission, a Civil Society Organization is coordinating the celebrations at Mukono District headquarters, under the theme “Widows matter! Include them. Support them. Defend their rights to land and security.”
An estimated 259 million widowed women worldwide are exposed to various forms of abuse and persecution, ranging from property theft and eviction to forced marriage and prostitution.
