A state witness in the defamation case against former UPC party president Olara Otunnu has asked court to ban media from covering the trial.
Gideon Tugume, a former Capital radio journalist told court presided over by Buganda Road magistrate Joan Achiro that having the case heard in the public is a threat to his security.
However Otunnu’s lawyer Asuman Basalirwa rubbished Tugume’s claims as baseless arguing that the state has the capacity to avail him with the necessary security.
Otunnu is charged for making defamatory statements against the person of the president in January 2013 while addressing a press conference at UPC headquarters. Court has adjourned the case to 20th July.
