Today Uganda joins African Union member states to mark the day of the African Child.

Celebrations are at Awir Primary School in Apac District under the theme “Protect the right of children, a call to action.”

The Day commemorated every 16th of June since 1991 is in memory of thousands of African school children, who participated in the Soweto Uprising on June 16 1976 protesting the poor quality of their education and demanding their right to be taught in their own language.

To date, it is still unclear how many people died on that day.
