South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has appealed to his rival Riek Machar to return to the capital and help rebuild the peace after a wave of deadly gun battles threatened to plunge the country back into civil war.

Machar, the rebel leader who was reappointed vice president as part of a peace deal to end almost two years of bitter conflict, left Juba a few days after fresh fighting broke out and his whereabouts remain unknown.
President Kiir who has described the ongoing conflict as uncalled for has given his rival an ultimatum of 48 hours to make contact. At least 300 people have been killed and tens of thousands are fleeing, many to Uganda.
