Scotland’s first minister has said a second independence referendum is “highly likely” after the UK voted to leave the European Union.

At a news conference following the UK EU referendum results earlier today, Nicola Sturgeon said it is “democratically unacceptable” that Scotland faces the prospect of being taken out of the EU against its will.

Scotland voted in favour of the UK staying in the EU by 62% to 38% but the general UK vote to leave was at 52%.

Ms Sturgeon says the Scottish government is to begin preparing legislation to enable another independence vote.
