A section of Ugandans have filed a petition against the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) directive to have all sim cards registered using National Identification Cards within seven days.
Led by Norman Tumuhiimbise of Rights Trumpet limited and lawyer Aaron Kizza, they are seeking a temporary injunction against the directive pending hearing of the main petition.
On 12th this month, the Uganda communication commission moved a directive that all SIM cards must be re-registered using National identification numbers.
The directive which expires two days from today has attracted alot of criticism from members of the public saying the time given is too short.
Today Tuesday 18th. April. 2017, a section of Ugandans filed a petition in civil division of the high court seeking a temporary injunction against UCC’s directive.
These insist that the directive is not only unconstitutional since it infringes on people’s rights to communicate but also unfair to many Ugandans who neither have national ids nor passport.
